Koningshoeven Abbey (Berkel-Enschot, NL) opens doors for inaugural Trappist market. From Friday, June 7 to Sunday, June 9, visitors can fully immerse themselves in Trappist artisanal culture. Although Trappists are best known for specialty beers such as Westvleteren or Orval, they also produce cheese, chocolate, soap, bread and more. Experience it all at this unique event for the whole family. Proceeds from the market will go to charity.

The various activities and tastings will make it a truly unique market! A wide range of specialty beers can be tasted, including the entire range of Trappist beers. To sample Westvleteren, for example, you would normally have to travel to the abbey itself. On this special occasion, however, visitors can taste it at the Trappist Market. Beyond tasting the beers, you can take part in beer and food pairing workshops in the abbey’s beautiful courtyard, buy artisan products from the Trappists and take a tour of the brewery. And there’s plenty to do for the little ones too.

“We want to showcase the wide variety of our products,” explains Sister José of Klaarland Priory, where they make jam, cookies and candles using traditional methods. ”This is a unique opportunity for beer lovers to be able to taste all the Trappist breweries side by side. Even the beers that are usually hard to come by in the Netherlands,” adds Brother Isaac of Abbey o.l.v. Koningshoeven. Tynt Meadow will even introduce a new beer at the event. “We are organizing the event at our Koningshoeven this year, but it would love for this to be the start of a touring tradition,” said Brother Isaac.

Charity event

With this event, the brothers and sisters of the Trappist order want to show what it means to be a Trappist, and why an artisan crafts are such an important part of Trappist life. One thing is certain: they are not in it for commercial gain. The proceeds from the Trappist market go to musical education for underprivileged children. During the music lessons, parents receive language classes.

140 years of the Koningshoeven

This year, beer brewery de Koningshoeven is celebrating its 140th anniversary. A milestone they would like to celebrate together with enthusiasts and relations by organising several activities, including the Trappist Market.

Tickets are available at www.trappistenmarkt.nl or www.trappistenmarkt.be. RRP: €9.50.

About the International Trappist Association

The International Trappist Association (IVT) unites abbeys where Trappists and Trappistines produce and sell a wide range of products. Best known are the Trappist® beers, but the order also makes products such as bread, cheese, liqueurs, chocolate and much more.

The following Trappist abbeys will take part in the inaugural Trappist Market at Koningshoeven abbey:

Nazareth abbey (Brecht), Koningshoeven abbey (La Trappe), Chimay, Klaarland, Lilbosch-Echt abbey, Mont des Cats, Mount Saint Bernard (Tynt Meadow), Nasi Pani, Orval, Rochefort, Westmalle, Westvleteren and Zundert. St. Catharinadal will also participate.

There are many aspects to being a Trappist.

The International Trappist Association (IVT): ”Trappists are monks and monastics who dedicate their lives to prayer and labour in a community. At the same time, they are part of the modern market economy: they produce and sell food and other items. They do so in a way that suits them: ethically and transparently, mindful of the humanitarian aspect and the environment”..
